Eucalyptus Oil

Essential Oil Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus Essential Oil was introduced at the Paris Exposition in 1867 after the Melbourne, Australia, botanical garden’s director suggested it as an antiseptic replacement for cajeput. The French government planted trees in Algeria to ward off “noxious gases” thought responsible for malaria. It worked because the trees transformed the marsh into dry land, eliminating the mosquito’s habitat. Australia’s “blue forests” are named for the haze produced by the tree’s essential oil, which mutes the surrounding scenery. Today eucalyptus is used liberally in industrial preparations, aftershaves, cologne, and mouthwash.

Medicinal action: A potent antiviral, antibacterial, and decongestant, eucalyptus treats sinus and throat infection, fever, and flu. Its drying activity is especially useful for respiratory conditions that produce excessive mucus.

Cosmetic/skin use: Studies show that eucalyptus is antiseptic on wounds, boils, insect bites, and lice, and antiviral on chicken pox and herpes simplex virus when applied as a 3 percent concentration. It also enhances skin repair and reduces itching and inflammation. Most liniments and vapor rubs contain it or its eucalyptol compound.

Emotional attributes: The scent increases energy, countering physical debility and emotional imbalance. It can reverse headache, shock, and stress.
